The American Pistol
By the late 18th Century, flintlock pistols were evolving right alongside their bigger cousins, the American longrifle. Their use became more commonplace in the colonies and they were possessed by more than just the gentry. After the French Revolution, sword duels were being replaced by pistol duels. Therefore, the pistol had to be aimed and accurate out to acceptable dueling ranges, roughly 25 yards. Because of the relatively short sighting plane, the addition of a rear sight now made this possible. Often referred to as the ‘Kentucky Pistol’, the distinctive architecture provided by the ‘Bird’s Head’ grip makes this pistol readily identifiable as one produced in the colonies rather than England.
Pricing ~ The base price for my American pistol is $1,800. I require a balance of $1000 to secure your spot on my build calendar. Barrel, lock, stock, furniture, and ornamentation options are similar to those of my longrifles. It generally takes approximately 4 weeks to complete once I begin work. The balance is due upon completion of the gun. I ship my guns in a wooden crate via FedEx and insure them for their value. The cost of shipping is in addition to the cost of the gun and typically runs between $175.00 to $200.00. I appreciate your interest in my work. Thank you for considering me to build your gun. I’m looking forward to a discussion about what I can build for you.
