The Jaeger

One of the most important influences on the American longrifle was the German Jaeger. The architecture of these guns dominated the 16th and 17th Centuries and even well into the 18th Century. During the Mid-1700’s, however, Colonial gun builders began to make substantial changes to their own creations and made them uniquely American.

Gun makers lengthened the barrels by as much as double, pared down the clunky profile of the stock and accompanying furniture, begun using curly maple instead of walnut, and decreased bore sizes. By the beginning of the Golden Age of the American longrifle, guns being built then would bear little resemblance to their Germanic forefathers.

This walnut-stocked Jaeger, with its 38″ barrel in .54 caliber, makes a fine rifle to carry through the fall woods in search of deer.

Pricing ~ The base price for my Jeager rifles is $2,750. This includes a 31″swamped Rice barrel (caliber of your choice), appropriate lock (right or left hand), nicely-figured stock (curly maple, black walnut, or cherry available) single fancy trigger, side plate, muzzle cap, and remaining furniture (brass, German silver, iron available). This does not include any other inlays, carving, or engraving. These are available at an additional cost.  I require a deposit of $1,400 for a rifle to secure a spot on my build calendar.  It generally takes approximately 4 weeks to complete once I begin work. The balance is due upon completion of the gun. I ship my guns in a wooden crate via FedEx and insure them for their value. The cost of shipping is in addition to the cost of the gun and typically runs between $175.00 to $200.00.  I appreciate your interest in my work. Thank you for considering me to build your gun. I’m looking forward to a discussion about what I can build for you.
